5150 and Gumbie Chat in Boston, Massachusetts

My handle back in the 1980's was #015[->Jonathan<-). Since then I spent most of my career as an IT Consultant or IT Manager in the Boston area for a few different companies. Around the beginning of the Covid pandemic, I got burned out on this career and left the IT field. I've moved to Central Mass and now work in Logistics, as a heavy machine operator at a distribution center in the shipping department. I'm happy to have found DDial again as it brings back lots of fond memories!!

Wow, this is great! So awesome to see names of people and ddials from the past! I started on Islechat and after a short time became the owner and sysop of Joe’s Bar & Grill. Spent tons of time meeting great people that have remained lifelong friends. Spent a lot of time back then at Photon!

These days, living the dream, in Florida! Hope people that I knew and haven’t kept in touch with are doing well. Maybe I will run into them here!

I was on the Las Vegas D-Dial called Computer Connection, where my primary handle was Prophet; but I was also known as the man of 1000 handles, because I'd randomly change it to a new pun-related name almost daily, before going back to Prophet. I went to two national events, one in Dallas and one in Houston, back in the 80s.

Hi Shawn,

I think I wrote D-Dial around 1980, so I would have been 30 then. I had a
friend at the time who was divorcing and was looking to meet new people.
They had a few articles on people who met in Compuserve chat rooms (before
AOL), but the per minute charges really added up that way. My friend
couldn't afford that.

So I figured I could write a chat system that ran on the Apple, and had the
idea to charge a flat monthly rate for access. I guess that idea caught on!

I kept working on D-Dial sporadically until about 1983. A big innovation was
the connecting of multiple systems. That was an interesting system because
everyone's "address" was just the path back to them, so it was different for
everyone on the network. That was an interesting idea that I've never seen
before or since.

Lately, I've been working on Diversi-Tune, which I initially wrote for the
2gs, but rewrote as a Java applet. Lately I've been switching to C#, and
doing some DVD creation stuff
